The city of Shawano is a small community of 9,300 located in Shawno County, Wisconsin. Although small in size, the city is home base for an abundance of activities and the county seat of an area that locals refer to as “Wisconsin’s Playground.”
Visitors can create their own adventure by hopping in the car and embarking on one of several driving tours of historic Shawano Country. These drives feature gorgeous natural scenery, waterfalls, wooded hills and rolling fields as well as museums to visit along the journey. The history-minded Heritage Park Museum displays artifacts and structures such as the 1870s-built John Kast house, a one-room school building, and a footbridge built in the 1800’s that leads to Sunset Island Park.
For modern-day fun, the Shawano Speedway provides heart-pumping thrills with a slate of high-speed stock car competitions. On a milder note, the annual Shawano County Fair entertains with a carnival, food, and games. Other annual affairs are Miles of Art, in which local artists open their studios for public tours, and Shawano Oktoberfest, the classic celebration of German culture.
