About Big Spring, TX
Travel west from Dallas, Texas along Interstate 20 towards U.S. Highway 87, and you will eventually come across the city of Big Spring, Texas. Big Spring is named after a large spring that, until around 1925, was the main source of water in the surrounding area. In the early days of the town, this natural watering hole attracted local hunters and ranchers which helped it grow from a simple camping settlement into a thriving community. Big Spring’s growth was also greatly helped when the railroads came through and with the discovery of oil in West, Texas in the 1920s. Even though the spring is now dry and no longer produces water, the city artificially maintains the spring in order to preserve the historical origins of the town.
If you happen to be in Big Spring, be sure to say the city’s name correctly when talking to the locals. They will be quick to remind you that the town’s name is singular and that there is no “s” at the end of “Spring”. What is curious about this is the fact that until 1916, the city was officially known as Big Springs with an “s”. To this day, it is not certain why the name underwent this slight modification.
