The city of Weslaco, Texas is situated along Interstate 2 in Hidalgo County, Texas. The name “Weslaco” is derived from the first letters of each word in the name, W.E. Stewart Land Company, which owned the original land that the city currently sits on. The city today is comprised of 13 square miles, has a population of 36,000 residents, and was once known as “Neon City” in reference to the neon signs that lit up many of the storefronts in Weslaco’s downtown district.
Weslaco is also the site of various colorful events throughout the year. The Texas Onion Fest, which is held every April at the city park, celebrates the development of the Texas 1015 Onion by Dr. Leonard Pike. The Onion Fest features live music, onion eating contests, a car show, and an onion recipe contest. Downtown Weslaco is home to the Alfresco Weslaco, which is a monthly jazz and art festival held on the third Thursday of every month. The Weslaco Museum features historical collections, archives and exhibits. Visitors can see artifacts that showcase the town’s history starting from the Spanish colonization to present times.
