It seems like these days everything is more expensive. In June of 2022, inflation rates were the highest they’ve been in the last 41 years. But don’t worry- Wisconsin has many helpful programs that can support residents in financial need. These programs cover all sorts of things- food, housing, utilities, healthcare, and even more. This blog will go over those programs, so you can rest easy.
To help its low-income citizens, Wisconsin provides a number of food and nutrition aid programs. Previously known as Food Stamps, FoodShare Wisconsin is the state's version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This is very helpful for individuals and families to afford groceries. There are resources to help residents understand who can apply, how to apply, and how to use their benefits. There are also special materials made for seniors and people with disabilities.
Each program has its own eligibility rules, and most have resources to help people find and apply for the assistance that’s right for them.
Two programs that Wisconsin offers are the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP), and the HACM's Voucher Program. The WHEAP helps lower income households with their energy needs. Included in this is fuel costs, electricity and other emergency energy needs. To qualify, your household's total income must be less than 60% of the average income for families in your state. On top of that, you will need to show proof of gross income for the month before your application. You will also need to provide all household members social security numbers, and to submit recent energy/utility bills. You can apply online at energybenefit.wi.gov, or call 1-800-506-5596.
HACM’s Housing Choice Voucher Program, also known as Section 8 Rent Assistance, helps low- and moderate-income families afford privately-owned rental housing. Each month, a rental subsidy—called a housing assistance payment—is sent directly to the landlord or assigned payee. For general inquiries or to apply, call (414) 286-5650 or email [email protected].
Medical and Health Coverage
Wisconsin offers several health assistance programs designed to support low-income individuals, families, seniors, and people with disabilities.
Most programs have some requirements, and applications can be submitted online through Wisconsin’s ACCESS portal. When applying for coverage, it’s important to apply early and to keep your information current. Also be sure to apply for multiple programs as you may qualify for more than one.
Cash and Emergency Assistance
To help individuals and families facing financial hardship, the state offers programs like:
Local hospitals and health care providers will frequently also have programs that help people with low incomes pay for or get rid of their medical costs. To qualify for these programs, individuals must generally meet specific income limits and demonstrate that they need financial assistance.
Employment and Education Support
The FoodShare Employment and Training Program (FSET) is available to individuals receiving FoodShare benefits and offers help with job searches, training, education, and support services such as transportation and child care.
Although we already mentioned it, the Wisconsin Works (W-2) program is also relevant for Employment and Educational support. The program also includes helping low-income parents and pregnant women with job preparation and placement services.
For older adults, the Wisconsin Senior Employment Program (WISE) provides part-time, community-based job opportunities and training for individuals aged 55 or older with limited income.
Most programs are free and come with added support services to help participants overcome barriers to work. Eligibility depends on income, age, employment status, and whether the applicant receives other benefits.
Life can get expensive fast, but the state of Wisconsin offers many programs designed to help. These programs cover many basic types of support that would be helpful to anyone. Things like medical, housing, and food programs are all there for people going through tough times. Don’t wait—check your eligibility, gather your documents, and apply. The support is there, and you might qualify for more than you think.
