5 Money Games to Play Online
by David Sung
It’s no secret that our attention span is getting shorter. It’s also no secret that games are still one of the only things that can keep our focus longer than videos or text. So if you’re looking for something that’s a little more entertaining but still educational, take a look at this age-friendly list of games on money management.
Farm Blitz (Ages 8+)
If you’ve found yourself spending hours on Farmville or the classic game Bejeweled, then Farm Blitz will be an easy game to pick up. The simplistic graphics makes the game’s goals easy to follow, and that’s exactly what developer, Doorways to Dreams, wanted to accomplish. Stack the vegetables on your farm plot to make a profit, but don’t forget to watch out for the threatening debt bunnies. Get rid of them in time and you advance to the next level. Farm Blitz is only one of many games produced by the company, but all are geared towards educating consumers on better financial planning strategies.
The Great Piggy Bank Adventure (Ages 8+)
You may have grown out of using a piggy bank but if you grew up playing Candyland, then you may find yourself on familiar territory. With Disney and T. Rowe Price backing the production, this is one of the best developed and interesting games that we’ve ever seen online. With single or multiplayer options, you move your character along the board with a roll of a dice, picking up cards and chances to invest or spend your money. Pop up boxes also appear with unique life situations that can either make or cost you money.
RoadTrip (Ages 13+)
RoadTrip involves the most coordination on our list. While it’s not much, you do need quick fingers to be able to maneuver your car on the road. Players start with $1,000 in cash and have to work to save money at the end of every level. There are various objects on the road that you can choose to pick up to earn money or avoid to save it. We like RoadTrip because it’s easy and has clear objectives. Just a reminder, watch out for your gas and insurance meter because running out can really leave you stranded.
Racing Squirrels (Ages 13+)
If you enjoy arcade style games, then Racing Squirrels is it. This game has a lot of moving parts, so we recommend reading all of the instructions before plunging in. But just like the title suggests, the game is about racing squirrels. You build your team by winning races and acquiring power-ups that increase your win potential. The graphics for this game are the best out of our list. Racing Squirrels may seem like just another computer game but with enough time and commitment, anyone can really learn how to manage money to achieve real-time goals.
Play Spent (Ages 17+)
Play Spent takes a realistic approach to very common financial situations. Created for the Urban Ministries of Durham, North Carolina, this game challenges players to make it 30 days on a strict budget. With only $1,000, players must strategically make decisions that will stretch their dollars as far as they can. Play Spent is an interactive game that will definitely keep you engaged and thinking about making wise financial decisions.
