Free Museums in Green Bay, Wisconsin

Buildings in Green Bay
When you’re visiting a new city, museums are a great and cheap way to soak up the local culture and learn more about the events that shaped the area. While Green Bay, Wisconsin, is a city that’s known for things like football and cheese, it also has numerous museums serving a variety of niches and interests. Better yet, some of these museums offer ways to obtain free admission.

Below are five of my favorite museums in the Green Bay area, along with info on how to get in for free (because who doesn’t love saving money?).

Neville Public Museum

Situated on the Fox River between downtown Green Bay and the Broadway District, the Neville Public Museum is one of the oldest and most popular museums in the region showcasing a collection that includes over one million artifacts. The museum focuses on presenting these collections and preserving art relevant to Northeast Wisconsin and United States history, along with rotating exhibits and occasional live performances.

Admission is free on the first Wednesday of every month for Brown County residents from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. However, anyone is welcome to use a buy one, get one free admission coupon from the City of Green Bay’s website, which can be found here.

National Railroad Museum

Often seen as a hidden gem in Green Bay, the National Railroad Museum is all about trains and features dozens of full-sized trains that date back to the 1800s.

Visitors can explore inside many of the old trains on display and there are various exhibits dedicated to everything from authentic photography to train parts and accessories. The museum also offers a 30-minute train ride around the property, with a conductor providing insight and history into the museum’s exhibits.

Visitors can get a buy one, get one free pass from the city’s website.

Hazelwood Historic House Museum

Are you a big fan of the Victorian era? The Hazelwood Historic House Museum is Green Bay's only historic house open to the public that is still on the original site where it was built. Built in 1837, the Hazelwood house itself is a stunning example of Greek Revival architecture. Its rooms contain hundreds of furnishings, photographs, and artifacts from the Victorian period, providing insight into what life was like for the powerful and wealthy Martin family who built the house.

Visitors can obtain a buy one, get one free pass from the city’s website.

The Automobile Gallery

The Automobile Gallery is a car lover’s dream located right in the heart of downtown Green Bay. The property itself is a former Cadillac dealership that’s been renovated to provide over 18,000 square feet of indoor event and gallery space. The gallery boasts over 80 automobiles spanning several different eras, each with its own story to take in to help you to understand the role of car in history and culture.

While some of the exhibits rotate out from time to time, there is always at least one car from each decade, including a 1912 Maxwell, 1981 DeLorean, and 2015 Cadillac CTS-V.

Military members can always get in for free, and you can also get buy one, get one free admission from a coupon on the city’s website.

The ARTgarage

Originally started by local artists who wanted a studio to use after they left college, the ARTgarage is now a cherished part of the Green Bay community that offers rotating exhibits and galleries, with a healthy mix of local artists and traveling exhibits.

The property is within an industrial building in downtown Green Bay, with its modern aesthetic providing the perfect setting for the art inside. Many of the artwork is for sale, and there are plenty of locally-made pieces available. You’ll also find classes, music and poetry events, and other special events throughout the year. Admission is always free at the ARTgarage.
