Helping the Midwest Recover

by David Sung

We are just as much a part of the communities we serve as the people we employ to oversee our store operations. That is why, whenever a community is impacted by a natural disaster, we want to do our part to make sure it gets back on its feet.

A recording breaking 80 tornadoes touched down in the surrounding states of Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Kansas and Indiana, but Harrisburg, Illinois, was the hardest hit community when a tornado that was rated an EF4 claimed six lives. In total, 12 people lost their lives, hundreds have been displaced, and many businesses were leveled. Ground operations are still assessing the damage, but it is clear that much needs to be done to repair these communities.

During times like this, we believe that people are the greatest resource for meeting the challenges. People who work for the Cash Store aren’t just our employees, they are family members and community leaders who we know are doing their best to put the pieces back together.Outreach services are being offered by organizations like the Salvation Army and the United Way of Southern Illinois. If you want to help in the rebuilding efforts, we encourage you to volunteer for or donate to Architecture for Humanity, which is working with local and regional professionals to assess the impact of affected communities and determine long-term solutions.

The Cash Store has already taken steps to assist Architecture for Humanity and the United Way by donating a total of $5,000. We know this gift will make a small difference, but the recovery programs still need your help. Pledge your support with either a financial contribution or by volunteering. Donation centers accepting canned foods and clothing have been set up at Cash Store locations in Marion, Benton and Carbondale. More information is listed below on how you can get involved.

We will continue to monitor the situation and bring you updates as they are released. Together, we can make a difference.
