More Details About Fort Atkinson, WILocated in Jefferson County along the Rock River, the city of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin is home to an estimated 12,300 inhabitants. Originally built at the site of a nineteenth century US military installation called Fort Koshkonong during the Black Hawk War, the city features a number of prehistoric indigenous mounds from more than 1,000 years ago and is named after the general who commanded the forces at Fort Koshkonong. In a further nod to its heritage, Fort Atkinson has preserved a number of nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings within its Main Street and Merchants Avenue neighborhoods.
A number of those buildings can be found at the Hoard Historical Museum, which also houses Hoard’s Dairyman Farm, home to the oldest continuously registered herd of Guernsey cattle in the United States. The complex also contains the National Dairy Shrine, which aims to preserve and highlight the history of dairy production not just regionally but as it developed across the country.
Annual events in Fort Atkinson include the musical Rhythm on the River and the trip into the past at the Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous. For nature lovers, the Rock River and Lake Koshkonong are destinations for all sorts of outdoor activities. Fort Atkinson’s new Riverwalk offers views of the Rock River within walking distance of downtown attractions. In Indian Mounds Park, a hiking trail takes you past the 11 indigenous effigy mounds. Boating, fishing and trail-walking are among the pastimes to enjoy on and around the city's Rock River Trail.
