Facts on Prairie du Chien, WIEstablished in the early 1600’s, the town of Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin is one of the oldest settlements in all of Wisconsin. Originally, it was a French outpost and its name literally translates to “prairie of the dog.” Today, the city is the county seat of Crawford County in southwestern Wisconsin and home to 6,000.
With its proximity to both the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers, Prairie du Chien was a key city in the fight between the French and British to control the Great Lakes Region of North America. In those days, the fur trading was a lucrative and vital industry and Prairie du Chien was established by the French to better control the fur trade.
With such a long and vibrant beginning, historic sites abound in the area. One example of a historic site in Prairie du Chien is the sprawling Villa Louis, a Victorian-style mansion of the Dousman family. Tours of the home and its gardens serve to educate and entertain visitors, and the annual horse carriage-driving competition held there draws spectators from all around. Visitors can even enjoy a breakfast prepared as it was in the Victorian era. Other annual events in town include the year-end Carp Fest and the Prairie Dog Blues Festival.
