More Information About West Bend, WI

The city of West Bend, Wisconsin began as a rest stop along a stretch of road that connected Fond du Lac, WI and Milwaukee, WI. Officially incorporated in 1885, the city eventually grew to become the present day seat of Washington County, WI and home to roughly 32,000 residents. Named after the bend in the Milwaukee River that runs through town, West Bend grew on the strength of the river, the source of energy that would go on to power the sawmills and gristmills that created the area’s industrial base.

West Bend is a city of trails for hiking and enjoying the outdoors. Thousands take pleasure walking the numerous trails and paths that run through West Bend, including a scenic, paved river walk along the Milwaukee River. There is also the Eisenbahn Trail, which is the culmination of a project that transformed old railroad tracks into paved walking paths. The Eisenbahn is now one of the most popular attractions in West Bend.

Cultural events and establishments abound in West Bend too. The Museum of Wisconsin Art is one of the premier art institutions in the state, providing a major showcase for local contemporary artists. The Washington County Historical Museum tells the story of the region’s heritage in one convenient stop. The Kettle Moraine Symphony Orchestra entertains with a slate of classical music performances at a reasonable price.

Annual events punctuate a full city calendar. Irish Eve takes St. Patrick’s Day celebrating to another level, with music, dancing and a buffet dinner. The Festival of Arts at University of Wisconsin-Washington County combines a crafts fair and exhibits with music and a farmers market.
