Elgin, Illinois Facts
After the Black Hawk Indian War and the removal of the last Native American tribes from northern Illinois, settlers began to pour into the area. Amongst these thousands of pioneers were two brothers from New York, James T. Gifford and Hezekiah Gifford. The Gifford brothers eventually chose an area about 40 miles northwest of Chicago along the Fox River where they established a settlement that would eventually become the city of Elgin, Illinois.Throughout its history, Elgin became famous for various different things. In its early days, the city was a center for daily production. The dairy industry then gave way to the fine watch making industry which then gave way to the education sector. Elgin is also known as the city that produced people who went on to accomplish great things. Elgin was the childhood home to several Nobel Prize winners, Pulitzer Prize winners, Academy Award winners, Olympic athletes, US Navy Admirals, and CEO’s of some of the country’s largest corporations. For its relatively small size, Elgin has had some extraordinary residents.
Today, Elgin has built a reputation as being a performing arts destination in Illinois. For example, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Elgin Opera are two of the most recognized performing arts groups in the state. The Children’s Theatre of Elgin presents four major shows each season. Finally, there is the Elgin Choral Union, an adult choir of 110 volunteers and professional section leaders which performs at Elgin Community College's Visual and Performing Arts Center, and also participates in many free community events.
