Information about Charleston, Illinois
The early history of Charleston, Illinois can be best described as a time of hostility between the newly arrived settlers and the local Native American tribes. The tensions between the two groups would eventually escalate into several small scale skirmishes which would continue until the 1840’s, when the last Native American tribes were expelled from the State of Illinois. Charleston’s history of violence erupted again during the years leading up to the Civil War, with pro-slavery and anti-slavery groups challenging one another for control of the town. In 1864, the two groups had a final confrontation in a large riot that left 9 dead and 12 wounded. After the Civil War, the tensions that had marked Charleston’s history were now gone and the city charted a new peaceful course. In 1895, Charleston became the home for Eastern Illinois Normal School after a stiff bidding competition with its neighbor to the east, Mattoon, IL. Today, the school is known as Eastern Illinois University with an enrollment of nearly 12,000 students. Charleston is also the county seat of Coles County, Illinois and home to just under 22,000 residents.
