More details about Chester, Illinois

Chester, Illinois is a small town of 8,500 people located along the Mississippi River in southwestern Illinois and currently serves as the county seat of Randolph County, Illinois. Chester is also home to the Menard Correctional Center, a maximum security penitentiary and the second oldest prison in all of Illinois. Initially, Chester started off as a ferry crossing for the Mississippi River. Due to the high volume of traffic created by the ferry and its ability to transport goods across the river, a general store and a mill were constructed nearby. Once these buildings were established, the city of Chester, Illinois was born.

For the most part, Chester is very much like any other unassuming small town in America. But no information on Chester, Illinois is complete without mentioning Chester’s most famous former resident, Elzie Segar, the creator of the comic strip Popeye. To this day, Chester is home to a six foot statue of Popeye, the Popeye character trail, the Elzie Segar Memorial Park, and the annual Popeye Picnic and Parade.
