More information about Decatur, IL

Founded in 1829, Decatur, Illinois is the largest city in Macon County, Illinois. With little more than 76,000 residents, Decatur maintains a small-town feel with tree-lined streets, two public high schools, one university (Millikin University), and a historic downtown. Decatur has often been associated with Abraham Lincoln and the launch of his political career. A statue of Lincoln sits in Lincoln Square in the heart of downtown Decatur to commemorate his “Stump Speech” in 1830, which was considered the first of his speeches to gain national attention. Furthermore, a plaque in downtown marks the site where Lincoln was nominated for President during the Republican Convention in 1860.

The city also played a historical role in the development of the National Football League. The Decatur Staleys were a professional football team that played in Decatur from 1919 to 1920. In 1920, the team moved to Chicago and re-named itself to the Chicago Bears, one of the original charter members of the NFL. Decatur has over 2,000 acres of public parkland and is host to over 130 annual events. For example, hundreds of thousands of people come to the annual Decatur Celebration festival. The event features live music performances from some of the biggest acts in the music industry, 10 show stages, a parade, a carnival, and three street blocks filled with arts and crafts and food carts.
