Information on Dixon, Illinois

Dixon, Illinois is a city of approximately 16,000 located along the banks of the Rock River about 40 miles southwest of Rockford, IL and 100 miles west of Chicago. In its early history, before the city even existed, the area was referred to by the locals as Dixon’s Ferry due to a ferry crossing that was operated by a man named John Dixon. John Dixon was also responsible for building the first structure in the area, a post office, and creating the infrastructure that lead to the establishment of the city. When it came time to give the new town an official name, Dixon’s Ferry was shortened to just Dixon in honor of Mr. John Dixon.

Today, Dixon serves as the county seat of Lee County, Illinois and, by most standards, is a typical mid-western small city. There are, however, a few former residents and a historical occurrence involving Abraham Lincoln that have secured Dixon’s place in US history. Dixon, Illinois was the boyhood home of Ronald Reagan and is the location of the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home National Historic Site. Dixon was also home to Charles Walgreen who founded the Walgreen’s drug store chain. Finally, Dixon was the site where Abraham Lincoln joined the Illinois Militia to fight in the Black Hawk War. The city commemorates this event with a statue of Lincoln and a park.
