In order to be closer to the railroads and to take better advantage of the commerce that the railroads would certainly bring, the people of Old Du Quoin decided to relocate their town closer to the railroads. Isaac Metcalf, a civil engineer from Maine, and Chester Keyes, a resident of Old Du Quoin, are credited with laying out this new town. When the move was completed, the citizens of Old Du Quoin removed the word “old” from the town’s name and re-named the new town to simply “Du Quoin”.
Modern day Du Quoin is located in southeastern Perry County, Illinois along Illinois State Highway 51. The city has a population of 6,448 and is commonly referred to as “The best kept secret in southern Illinois”. It is known as a serene, inviting, and laidback place to live. Originally founded on agriculture and mining, Du Quoin has evolved into a high-tech, modern city that still maintains the charm of a small, mid-western town. The city’s most famous event is its State Fair that showcases horse races, motor sports, nightly concerts, a food and wine show, a rodeo, and a demolition derby. Other yearly events held in Du Quoin include a camping convention, water skiing championships, hovercraft water racing, and local Sunday flea markets.
