Additional facts about Du Quoin, IL

In 1853, the residents of what was then Old Du Quoin, Illinois noticed that railroads were being laid a few miles west of their city. In order to be closer to the railroads and to take better advantage of the commerce that the railroads would certainly bring, the people of Old Du Quoin decided to relocate their town closer to the railroads. Isaac Metcalf, a civil engineer from Maine, and Chester Keyes, a resident of Old Du Quoin, are credited with laying out this new town. When the move was completed, the citizens of Old Du Quoin removed the word “old” from the town’s name and re-named the new town to simply “Du Quoin”.
