More information on East Peoria, ILIn the mid 1800’s, the city of Peoria, IL was a prosperous and booming town. As Peoria became more and more crowded, many of the locals turned their attention to the east side of the Illinois River in hopes of getting away from the overcrowding that was happening in Peoria. One of these individuals, Almiron S. Cole, aka Captain Cole, not only made the move across the river, but he also constructed the first toll bridge connecting Peoria, IL with the eastern shore of the Illinois River. Captain Cole’s new bridge led to the development of the town of Coleville directly across the river from Peoria. In 1884, Coleville and the neighboring town of Bluetown merged into the city of Hilton which would eventually be re-named into present day East Peoria, Illinois.
East Peoria currently resides in Tazewell County, Illinois. It is part of the Peoria Metropolitan Area and home to 23,402 residents. East Peoria is also home to Illinois Central College, a Caterpillar manufacturing plant and several of the news outlets that service the Peoria metro area. In recent years, East Peoria, especially the downtown area, underwent major renovations to its infrastructure that also included the addition of a convention center, a public library, and a casino.
