In 1901 Malcolm Love, a local industrialist and civic leader, purchased a 236-acre plot of land along the Rock River. His property became an assembly place for social events and eventually became known as Loves Park. A railroad was built through Mr. Love’s land which helped initiate development of the Love’s Park area. By 1947, Loves Park was officially incorporated and by 1950, the city had a variety of establishments including a train station, gas stations, churches, grocery stores, and many other conveniences.
Loves Park is now a city of nearly 24,000 inhabitants covering a little over 16 square miles of land. It is officially part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has experienced a steady rate of growth in recent decades. Since 2000, Loves Park has increased in population by 20%.
