In 2010, Appleton, Wisconsin was listed by Money Magazine as one of the 100 best places to live in America. Located along the Fox River in eastern Wisconsin, Appleton currently serves as the county seat of Outagamie, Wisconsin and is home to over 72,000 residents. Nearly 1,600 of these residents are students at the second oldest co-ed college in the United States, Lawrence University. The school and the city of Appleton have a long and intimate history together. Both the school and the city were founded in 1847 and both relied on one another frequently during the early part of their history when their futures were in doubt. The name Appleton itself commemorates one of the founders of Lawrence University, Samuel Appleton.
