Founded in 1850, the city of Belton, Texas was known as Nolandville during its first year until the town changed its name to Belton in 1851. In the latter part of the nineteenth century, Belton, TX was posed for greatness. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor had just been completed and the town had just finished construction on its new courthouse. All that the city needed was a railroad to connect it with the rest of the country. Unfortunately for Belton, the bidding war to bring a railroad to the city was lost, and instead of Belton getting the railroad, the city of Temple, TX just a few miles north of Belton received that honor.
The loss of the railroad caused Belton to go into an economic slump for a few decades. It wasn’t until 1942 when Fort Hood was constructed in nearby Killeen, TX that Belton’s economy began to improve. Today, the city still relies heavily on Fort Hood and the University for most of its economic health. Belton also marks the halfway point between Austin, TX and Waco, TX along Interstate 35, which makes the city a convenient rest stop for travelers. Belton currently serves as the county seat of Bell County, Texas, and has just over 18,000 residents within an area of thirteen square miles.
