Situated about an hour and a half north of Dallas, Bonham, Texas is one of the oldest cities in Texas. Officially incorporated in 1848, Bonham was named after James Butler Bonham, a Texas war hero who fought at the Alamo during the Texas Revolution. Today, Bonham is home to roughly 10,000 residents and was the hometown of one of Texas’ most celebrated and most influential politicians, Sam Rayburn.

Sam Rayburn’s legacy lives on at the Sam Rayburn Library and Museum in downtown Bonham. History enthusiasts can hear Sam speak through recordings and see his impact on Texas and America. The Sam Rayburn House is also a stop for many visitors. It has been recently restored to its appearance at the time of Mr. Rayburn’s death. Visitors can also enjoy the Fannin County Museum of History, which contains historical information about Bonham all the way back to the Texas Revolution and the Civil War.

One of the most popular events in Bonham is the annual Autumn in Bonham bike rally, which is designed to suit bikers of all ages and all skill levels with routes ranging from 28 to 64 miles. For the outdoor enthusiasts, nearby Bonham State Park offers many different activities for visitors of all ages. Visitors can enjoy the park’s large central lake and the miles of scenic hiking and biking trails that meander through the park.
