Additional facts about Kaufman, Texas

Located about 30 miles southeast of Dallas along US Highway 175, the municipality of Kaufman, Texas is a small town of 6,000 and the county seat of Kaufman County. The city and county were named after David S. Kaufman, a Texas lawmaker who served as a member of the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate in the first half of the nineteenth century. Kaufman’s other claim to fame is that it was the first place to capture and jail the infamous American outlaws, Bonnie and Clyde.

For those who happen to be in Kaufman, there are a few must see places around town. There is the Kaufman Veterans Memorial and Park located on South Houston Street. It is said that during the construction of the Memorial, builders had a very difficult time finding names of Kaufman County residents who had served in the military because there were no official records. The members of the Memorial Park Board were forced to knock on doors as well as search the internet and government records to compile the list of over 5,000 names that currently decorate the Memorial. Only after this grass roots effort was completed was the Memorial able to be finalized.

Visitors may also want to check out the historic First National Bank Building located in downtown Kaufman. The building was constructed in 1908 and housed the original bank vault for the town. Today, the vault is located in a gift shop and in the back of the building, there is the Especially For You Tea Room that serves signature lemonade tea that is brewed and bottled on site.

For those seeking peace and quiet, Kaufman provides an escape from the hustle of the Metroplex. For example, residents and visitors can relax at one of the city’s golf courses. There is also Camp Peace on Earth, a beautifully wooded, 100 acre park, which surrounds a spring-fed lake. This is the perfect spot for camping, picnics or even just taking a peaceful walk among nature and the abundant wildlife.
