Located along the Rio Grande River in Hidalgo County, the city of Mission, Texas has a population of more than 77,000 residents and can trace its recorded history as far back as the 1700s when this area was conquered by the Spanish. The modern history of Mission started in 1906 when a tract of land called Rancho La Lomita was granted to two businessmen, Captain Conway, and J.W. Hoit. Two years later, in 1908, the Missouri Pacific Railroad established a railway station near the center of the newly founded development which further secured the area as a permanent settlement. 1908 was also the year that the city of Mission, Texas was officially established.
Since 1921, Mission has been known as the “Home of the Ruby Red Grapefruit.” Every year, Mission presents the Texas Citrus Fiesta, where it celebrates the citrus industry and the prosperity that industry has brought to the city. Mission is also home to the National Butterfly Center, where visitors can see many beautiful and unique butterflies. Along with attracting butterflies, the center also attracts birds that are local to only south Texas. The Mission Historical Museum showcases the history of Mission with early maps and artifacts. It also features local sports heroes, including Hall of Fame coach and Dallas Cowboys legend Tom Landry, who was born and raised in Mission, Texas.
