More facts about Sherman, Texas

Head north on US Highway 75 from Dallas for about an hour and a half and you will come to the city of Sherman, Texas. But did you know that Sherman was not always where it is today? Many cities have changed their name or their motto, but Sherman actually changed its physical location in 1848. Originally, the city was situated about 4 miles to the east of its current location. The town decided to move in order to get better access to water.

Throughout its history, Sherman became famous for two things, its large number of colleges and universities and its prowess as a financial center in the State of Texas. In the middle of the 19th century, so many schools were operating in Sherman that the city was known as “The Athens of Texas”. At the same time, Sherman was home to the largest bank in Texas and was named the State's financial center by Dunn and Bradstreet in 1885. Those days are now long gone, but Sherman is still home to Austin College, the oldest institution of higher learning in Texas.
