More details on Waxahachie, Texas

Founded in 1850, the city of Waxahachie, Texas began with little more than 100 people. It existed as a small farming community for nearly fifty years until it experienced a cotton boom at the turn of the century. During this time, the area around Waxahachie became one of the largest producers of cotton in the country and also became known as the “Cotton Queen”.

Waxahachie is now a suburb in the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex with a little over 30,000 residents and is now known as the “movie capital of Texas”. Waxahachie has been a popular location for many highly-acclaimed movie shoots during the past several decades. In 1984, the Academy Award-winning director, Robert Benton, filmed Places in the Heart, in his hometown of Waxahachie. The city was also one of the film locations for the Oscar-winning film, Bonnie & Clyde in 1967, Tender Mercies in 1981, and The Trip to Bountiful in 1985. To this day, Waxahachie remains a popular location to shoot both films and TV programs.

There are many fun and exciting things to do and see while visiting Waxahachie. Visitors can stop by the Webb Gallery to view the huge collection of vintage art, or the Ellis County Art Museum that features works from local artists. Take a walk through historic downtown Waxahachie and visit some of the many fine shops and gourmet restaurants. While downtown, stop by the Rogers Street Bridge that connects the Waxahachie Creek Hike and Bike Trail. Finally, be sure to review the homes on the Gingerbread Trail tour and see the beautiful Victorian-style architecture and gingerbread carpentry.
