About Blackfoot, ID

Known as the Potato Capital of the World, the city of Blackfoot, Idaho proudly declares its ties to the potato industry with their nickname. Blackfoot is also the county seat of Bingham County, Idaho and home to approximately 12,000 residents. In 1874, the founders of the city took a risk and constructed a general store on a plot of land where they predicted would be the site of a post office and railroad station after learning that a railroad would be constructed nearby. Four years later, in 1878, the risk paid off when a railroad track was indeed laid near the general store along with a post office and railroad station.

For those who happen to find themselves in the Blackfoot area, visiting the Idaho Potato Museum can be a tasty as well as an informative venture. The museum gives out free hash browns to its visitors as well as being the home of the world’s largest potato chip, which spans over 23 feet. Another local museum that history buffs will want to visit is the Bingham County Historical Museum. The museum is a 15-room plantation style mansion and part of the Bingham County Historical Society which is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the history of Blackfoot, Idaho.

If you are lucky enough to visit Blackfoot on Labor Day or the week after, you can attend the Eastern Idaho State Fair. Beginning with a parade, the state fair is a celebration of everything that Idaho has to offer. As with many state fairs, the largest draw is the food and, in this particular case, food involving the potato. One of the most popular competitions at the fair is the best potato recipe challenge.
