More Information on Belvidere, IL
Originally called “Elysian Fields,” the city of Belvidere is located in north central Illinois in Boone County. When the area was first settled, the majority of the Belvidere population settled on the north side of the Kishwaukee River. This all changed when a railroad was built on the south side of the river. After the railroad came through, businesses and residents followed suit, spreading the population to the southern side of the river closer to what is now known as downtown Belvidere. One of Belvidere’s best features is its parks system. The city’s premier park, Belvidere Park, spans 105 acres and sits alongside the Kishwaukee River. In addition to the park’s popular fishing pier, there are several indoor and outdoor recreation facilities including basketball courts, volleyball courts, tennis courts, and baseball fields. There is also a rather large playground in Belvidere Park and a historic bridge that connects the north and south sides of the city.
Belvidere is also home to one of the country’s most unique chapels. Located in the Belvidere Cemetery, the Pettit Memorial Chapel is one of the few chapels ever designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The structure was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
